An engaging and mysterious Italian ebonised dome-top Tabernacle c.1750 with a much earlier polychrome and gilt walnut figure of the Virgin Mary. Mary stands upon a pomegranate, a symbol which represents Mary as the ‘Mother of the Church’. The base also resembles an imperial orb, standing for temporal power. The tabernacle would have been made for private devotion.
