Large Italian Merman Putti Frieze c.1740
An incredible water-gilded, gesso and polychrome Italian Merman Putti wall frieze c.1740
Exquisitely carved, detailed and vibrantly gilded.
This beautiful frieze would have been part of the altar or internal decoration of a Palazzo or Church.
With ornate carved supports flowing from his skirt and tail would have be adorned by illuminating candles. The Merman is featured in a grasping pose that would possibly have held a small heraldic processional flag illustrating the hierarchy and identifying the member of nobility that originally commissioned the piece.
