Monumental English Gothic Revival Sandstone Capital c.1850–1880

Monumental English Gothic Revival Sandstone Capital c.1850–1880

An imposing English Gothic Revival capital in carved sandstone, measuring a monumental 78cm across.

The carving is full of life: scrolling foliage inhabited by small birds, winged heads with calm expressions, and a dog’s mask at the corner. Details that reflect the Victorian fascination with medieval ornament, reinterpreted by the great 19th-century workshops for use in churches and civic buildings.

Hollowed for its original architectural purpose, the capital retains a fine weathered surface that speaks of its age and history. Its presence is sculptural in its own right, but equally it could be reimagined as a wellhead, fountain, or garden centrepiece, where water and stone would bring out the richness of the carving.

A strong and rare fragment of the Gothic Revival, with real decorative impact indoors or outside.
