English Lead Garden Fountain with Cherub Figures, c.1920

English Lead Garden Fountain with Cherub Figures, c.1920

A charming and very finely-modelled English lead fountain, cast with a group of four playful dancing cherubs around a two-tiered scallop shell bowl. One figure holds a bow alluding to his role as Cupid or amor, and raises an arm skywards as water cascades down. The base support features three distincative dolphin.

The fountain is richly detailed, with lively modelling and a naturalistic shell base. When plumbed, water rises through the central copper pipe and spills over the scallop bowls, enlivening the figures with movement and sound.

Lead garden statuary of this type has a long tradition in England, reaching back to the 18th century when workshops such as Van Nost and Cheere produced fountains and figures for great country house gardens. This example, dating from the early 20th century, continues that tradition with wonderful character and patination.

A delightful decorative fountain for a garden, courtyard or formal setting.
